Illegal ‘fish balls’ firm in Livingston shut down

AN illegal food business has been shut down by environmental health officers.

West Lothian Council said it had discovered a large-scale production of a “fish ball” good at a closed shop in Main Street, Livingston, which had previously traded as Ying Takeaway.

The underground activity was uncovered during a raid on Monday.

The balls made of minced fish, meat and other ingredients were being packaged under the brand name ‘Fu Zhou Chan Kee’. More than 1200 bags of the product were destroyed.

A spokesman for the council’s environmental health team said: “The business was operating behind closed shutters and everything possible was being done to conceal activity inside. Immediate action was taken to deal with the operation and also to ensure the food was removed.”
