Inmate died on Xmas Day

A PRISONER from Saughton died in custody Christmas Day.

Edwin Geirnaert was convicted of wilful fire-raising at Edinburgh High Court on July 9, 2009.

Geirnaert, who was in his early sixties, had a string of convictions and had spent time in a high-security unit after setting fire to a mental hospital. He had also been jailed for making hoax bomb warnings, a court heard in 2009.

The Scottish Prison Service could not discuss the nature of his death, but said police had been advised and the matter would be reported to the procurator fiscal. Next of kin have been informed and a fatal accident inquiry may be held in due course, the service added.
