Inspectors praise Wester Hailes school

WESTER Hailes Education Centre has been praised following a recent inspection by
Education Scotland.

According to the report, the school has made “significant progress” since an earlier inspection, with the quality of learning and teaching improving and attendance continuing to rise.

Attainment is also improving, although the school said it wanted to get better in that area.

The report adds: “It now has the capacity for further improvement and is in a strong position to deliver better results for its young people.”

No further visits will be made in connection with the inspection report of May 2010.

Earlier this year, the Evening News told how pupils at WHEC had seen their Standard Grade success rate soar in recent years.

A record 21 per cent of S4 pupils at the school achieved five or more Standard Grades at credit level in their recent results – up from two per cent in 2009 and nine per cent last year. The results were hailed by city education leader Paul Godzik as “fantastic”.

At the time, head teacher Sheila Paton said improving attendance had been a key factor to improving performance. Every pupil at WHEC has been assigned a staff mentor. And teachers hold monthly meetings to see how they can make lessons more engaging.
