Labour group says no to Midlothian police board

The opposition Labour group at Midlothian Council has opted out of becoming part of a “toothless” new Police and Fire and Rescue Board.

Legislation setting out Scottish Government plans for a single Police Service for Scotland was approved by the Scottish Parliament in the Summer.

In Midlothian the council has a legislative requirement in agreeing to those plans.

With the board coming fully into effect on April 1, moves to form an interim ‘shadow’ board were proposed at a meeting of the full council in October.

Labour at the time refused to confirm whether it would be taking up two available positions, but at a recent meeting of the full
council, Councillor Adam Montgomery (Lab) explained that his group would not be having any involvement.

He said: “We have outlined our reasons in the past and those haven’t changed. Your role as a shadow board will be completely toothless.”
