A housebuilder’s bid to erect 40 properties on land next to Polton House has been turned down by Midlothian Council.
The application, by Edinburgh firm Poltonhall Property Limited, to develop 34 houses and six flats on land North East of Polton Road, Lasswade, was refused on the grounds that the proposed land has been designated as green belt.
Council planners also felt that the “highly visible” site should be protected for its “outstanding character” being both within the Mavisbank Conservation Area and the Midlothian Area of Great Landscape Value.
They ruled that the design and layout of the development would have a significant adverse affect on the visual amenity of the area and the setting of the conservation area.
