leith tees up bid for golf statue
CAMPAIGNERS hope Leith Links can clinch the title of Home of Golf within the next six months by winning permission to put up a statue to the man who first wrote down the rules of the game.
Golf has been played on Leith Links since the 15th century and John Rattray was captain of the team that wrote a set of rules in 1744.
Approval is needed from the Scottish Parliament in the form of private legislation before the statue (pictured) can be erected, but Pat Denzler, chairwoman of the Leith Rules Golf Society, said they hoped that could be secured in six months, cementing Leith Links’ claim to the prestigious title.
She said efforts to raise £50,000 for the statue and landscaping were also going well.
