Police are investigating after sheep were killed near Penicuik.
The incident in a field at Auchencorth Farm occurred between 5pm on Tuesday and 7am on Wednesday.
Around 20 sheep and lambs appear to have been attacked by a dog, resulting in their death.
Several more sheep were injured.
Officers are now urging anyone who can assist with their investigation to come forward.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The death of these sheep and lambs has an obvious financial impact upon the farmer. “However, the manner in which they have died is also very distressing.
“We would urge any members of the public who may have seen anything suspicious overnight, or who may have relevant information, to contact Police Scotland immediately on 101, or make an anonymous report through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
