Loanhead band set for national contest

MacTaggart Scott Loanhead Band is competiting in the National Championships in Cheltenham this week.

The musicians will take on other regional 4th Section Champions and runners-up from all over Britain on Friday September 23. Ten of the 28 players on stage have come up through the ranks of the junior band, Loanhead Brass Roots.

‘King Henry V’, a concert overture for brass band composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams in the 1930s, is the test piece and the band has been working hard in rehearsals with musical director Mark Bell.

Since May, players, their families and friends have been raising funds for the trip. The culmination of the fund-raising efforts was a concert in Loanhead Ex-Servicemen’s Club earlier this month at which the senior band, Loanhead Brass Roots, Loanhead Brass Youth and Dalkeith and Monktonhall Brass Band performed individually and then formed a massed band.
