Local Hero awards: Has someone you know shown great courage?

Now the people of Edinburgh are being given a chance to show their gratitude by nominating those who have demonstrated inspirational courage and determination for an accolade at this year’s Local Hero Awards.

With the nominations deadline set for April 27, the Evening News is encouraging city residents to get their final recommendations in fast before a shortlist is compiled early next month.

This week, we are seeking nominations for our Bravery Award 2016 and in the Carer of the Year category.

Winners will be rewarded at a glittering awards ceremony on Friday, May 27, which will be held at the Assembly Rooms on George Street.

Over 300 guests will be treated to performances from a variety of entertainment acts, including the Soul Nation choir.

Euan McGrory, deputy editor of the Edinburgh Evening News, said: “There is no shortage of unsung heroes living in and around Edinburgh.

“In every area of life and in every community, there are people who go the extra mile day after day to help make Edinburgh and the Lothians the fantastic place it is. This is the chance to honour them.”

For our Bravery Award 2016, judges are looking for someone who has overcome great odds or made sacrifices above and beyond the call of duty.

The nominee may have shown courage in dealing with an illness, or perhaps they have battled through a traumatic experience.

Last year saw Martin Graham, from Bonnyrigg, take home an accolade sponsored by MacDonald Hotels and Resorts.

He rescued two schoolboys from an ice-covered drainage pond near Hopefield Estate after he heard their cries for help.

The Evening News is determined to show residents of Edinburgh and the Lothians that their bravery and hard work have not gone unnoticed and is asking readers to share their stories and tell us why they deserve to win.

Sharon Duncan, who won Carer of the Year last year for her outstanding efforts, is encouraging those who live in and around the Capital to nominate their local heroes before it is too late.

She said: “Last year’s awards ceremony was just tremendous – I still think about it to this day.

“Even though I love what I do every day, I was over the moon to receive an award, it just gave me that extra boost.”
