A lollipop man has accused the council of threatening him and his colleagues with the sack if they do not agree to plans to end lunchtime patrols.

The man, who asked not to be identified, was angry after receiving a letter from the council.

He said: “They are telling me that if I don’t want to take the job then I’m out of the box. How can they dismiss me?

“A voluntary redundancy scheme is mentioned in the letter, but I don’t qualify for that as I have only been in the job for six years.

“The letter leaves me no option but to accept what they are saying..”

Midlothian Council, said: “We are working closely with the school crossing guides and trade unions with a view to seeking an agreement on implementing the revised working arrangements.”
