The Midlothian West by-election, prompted by the resignation of councillor Owen Thompson (SNP), will be held on September 10.
Mr Thompson stood down from Midlothian Council after being elected as a Member of Parliament for Midlothian in May’s General Election.
Knneth Lawrie, Returning Officer and Chief Executive of Midlothian Council, said: “Owen Thompson has served as a councillor for Loanhead and latterly for Midlothian West for nearly 10 years. I wish him well in his new role as a Member of Parliament.
“I now look forward to involving the public in the democratic process to elect a new councillor for the Midlothian West Ward.”
To register to vote or apply for a postal vote people should contact the Electoral Registration Office at www.lothian-vjb.gov.uk or phone 0131 344 2500. The registration deadline is August 25 and the postal deadline is August 26.
Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm and poll cards will be sent to all electors in the ward nearer the election.
In view of the ongoing summer holidays, the background papers, including nomination forms, will be available on the council’s website from July 13 for any person who is considering standing as a candidate. However, the formal period for nominations begins on July 22 and ends on August 10.
The election will use the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system where voters can rank candidates in order of preference rather than using a single cross. Voters can give a rank to as many or as few candidates as they like.
