Newbattle Abbey College is to host three Midlothian Science Festival events later this week.

The residential adult education college is set to open its grounds to the public for three free events: The Secret Life of Herbs, Woodland Explorers and The Future of Our Woodlands.

The Secret Life of Herbs is a family event which will give visitors the opportunity to enjoy a sensory journey around Newbattle Abbey gardens. The event is due to take place at 11am on Thursday, October 17 and will teach children about a variety of different herbs and their respective uses. They will also be encouraged to plant their own mini herb garden to take home.

On Friday, October 18 (1pm – 5pm), staff from Forestry Commission and Forestry Research will be on hand to talk to children about woodland bugs and how to protect trees from diseases during Woodland Explorers.

A third event, The Future of Our Woodlands, will take place later on the Friday (7pm – 9pm). The discussion event, which is suitable for those aged 14 and over, will address future options for local woodland regarding Ash Dieback Disease.
