Midlothian Council has been named the worst in Britain in a review of housing benefits by Audit Scotland.
Midlothian MSP Colin Beattie (SNP) has called for two leading councillors to resign following the “appalling” report.
Audit Scotland’s review of housing and council tax benefit performance found the local authority to be the worst in Britian for the speed it handled change of circumstance cases. It was also in the bottom 20 for new claims performance.
Mr Beattie blamed council leader Derek Milligan and Councillor Jim Muirhead for the “embarrassing” report.
He plans to write to chief executive Kenneth Lawrie voicing his concerns as the council received a poor report, looking at the same areas, from Audit Scotland in 2008.
