Midlothian Council has shown a turnaround in the time it takes to process new housing and council tax benefit claims.
As reported in last week’s Advertiser, recent figures released by Audit Scotland revealed that in 2010/11 the council’s new claims performance was “well below” the British average, at an average of 32 days.
However, the latest Department of Work and Pensions data shows that the council has successfully reduced the average processing times for new claims to 20 days in the first three months of 2011/12.
Processing new claims in 20 days is below the national average and moves Midlothian from one of the lowest 20 councils in Britain to within the top five in Scotland.
