The allocation of parking spaces for “council staff only” in Dalkeith has been described as “deplorable” by a former community representative.

Speaking at what was his last visit to Dalkeith and District Community Council as a member, outgoing treasurer Erik Spinks blasted the fact that there are now 243 spaces for employees of Midlothian Council, and just 336 for other motorists.

He said: “To have 243 for council staff in a small town like Dalkeith is absolutely deplorable.

“How is this justified? The bowling club [public] car park is stowed out with council staff, and employees also use the football ground at Fairfield House. This is a very emotive subject.

“Why should council staff, mainly clerks and people who do a ‘normal’ job, get these dedicated spaces? What about everybody else who works in Dalkeith or has a need to go there?”
