Midlothian Dog Training Club

Midlothian Dog Training Club was started in 1986 by Jim Rutherford and currently has 96 members, with more joining every week.

Over the years the club has taught new tricks to thousands of dogs. It has eight volunteer trainers and hosts agility, obedience and puppy classes in Bonnyrigg, Penicuik and at Vogrie Park.

Midlothian Dog Training Club chairperson Angela Brady said: “The members are all happy to come every week. They see the benefits.

“This is my 11th year, fourth year as chairman. I love it. I started with my dog Buddy as a puppy at 12 weeks old and he will be 11 this year.

“He’s a collie and I know they are quite clever so I wanted to keep his head active, and I have stuck at it ever since then.

“We have had a lot of good times. We do Christmas parties every year for owners and dogs. It’s fancy dress for both. That’s always fun.”

Angela is looking forward to the fun dog show, which also raises money for charity.

She said: “Every year we donate at least £500 to dog charities. This year all the proceeds from the fun day will go to Edinburgh Cat and Dog Home and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

“We are going to have an obedience demonstration and agility demonstration. We have got a club coming to do a fly ball demonstration.

“It will be a good family day. And if you have got dogs then bring them along to see what can be achieved.”

Of the future, Angela added: “We are going to keep going, we are a very strong club. Everywhere, people get dogs and they are looking for somewhere to take them.

“It’s good fun and it is always positive training for the dogs.”
