A dog is for life not just for Christmas as the saying goes – but Midlothian’s dog warden is warning the public to be careful when buying a puppy.
An increasing number of puppies are being imported illegally into Scotland from puppy farms in Europe.
They are advertised on internet sites or adverts in newspapers.
The dogs are accompanied by false and forged documentation which leads buyers to believe they have been bred in the UK.
Tam Crawford, Midlothian Council dog warden, said: “It’s really important to buy your new puppy from a responsible breeder who has the best interest of the dog at heart.”
