Almost 20,000 Midlothian residents have had their personal details stolen and sold to online fraudsters within the last three years.

A staggering 19,754 files belonging to people across the region, including bank details, passwords and credit card numbers, are currently for sale on secret web communities, the Advertiser can reveal.

Of those, 2,005 are deemed to be high risk, including 142 files that contain a credit card number and CVV number from the back of the card that people need when they buy online.

Criminals are also selling 151 dates of birth belonging to Midlothian residents, 868 files that have both their email addresses and passwords, 833 credit card numbers, eight account numbers and three “secret answers” that people use when they lose or forget their passwords.
