Midlothian has paid its respects to former provost and councillor Sam Campbell, who was buried at Newton Cemetery on Monday.

Known to many as “Mr Danderhall”, the 85-year-old died at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on April 2 following a short battle with cancer of the lymph nodes.

Attending his funeral service were family, friends and former colleagues within the local Labour party, as well as dignitaries including Baron George Foulkes of Cumnock.

His son Kenny Campbell (56), who gave an eulogy, said afterwards: “I shared my dad with a generation of Danderhall residents. He was a doting dad but we knew if something came up he would deal with it, and people would come to our door on a regular basis. It sounds bad but it wasn’t like that at all. We realised that there were times when he had to deal with his constituents problems.”
