Midlothian public urged to use nose in drugs fight

POLICE are seeking the public’s help to sniff out illegal drugs in the community.

The move follows a recent incident in Mayfield, where officers making a separate inquiry detected the pungent smell of cannabis.

A search of the property detected cannabis plants and cultivation equipment.

While police are keen for the public to keep their eyes and ears open for suspicious activity, they have underlined the importance of smell in the fight against drug-related crime.

Sergeant Scott Meechan told a recent meeting of Mayfield and Easthouses Community Council that officers were trained to detect the smell of illegal substances.
