In 1989 Midlothian took part in an event to celebrate the bi-centenary of the French Revolution. This led to the region being presented with a number of artefacts related to the event.
This celebratory plate bears much of the symbolism related to the original event, including French flags and a red hat.
A number of Midlothian towns have long-established twinning links with communities in France - Jarnac and Dalkeith, St Cyr L’Ecole and Bonnyrigg and Lasswade, L’Isle sur la Sorgue and Penicuik, Angres and Danderhall, Harnes and Loanhead, and Ivry-le-Temple and Moorfoot.
