Midlothian students to lose out

Jewel and Esk College is to work more closely with other Lothians colleges as part of Scottish Government efforts to make the sector “more efficient and responsive” to the needs of students and local economies.

Jim Hume, Scottish Lib Dem MSP for South Scotland, has accused the SNP Government of a “missed opportunity” on college funding in Midlothian.

Speaking after the publication of the Scottish Government’s Spring Budget Revision order, he said: “This is another missed opportunity to help students in Midlothian and the surrounding areas.

“Finance Secretary John Swinney should have been indicating he would be reversing his £800,000 funding cut to Jewel and Esk College, which equates to 244 student places. There is no excuse to make these cuts now he has the extra money available.”
