A COUNCIL-run service offering free housework and shopping for the elderly is set to be axed.
The Home Support Service, which delivers practical help for pensioners, will be “disestablished” on August 31 next year.
The decision was ratified by the cabinet at Midlothian Council last week. By winding down provision of the service, the local authority expects to save £103,000 by 2015.
The measure, according to the Acting Director of Communities and Wellbeing, Eibhlin McHugh, “will remove inefficiency in a service area that is not considered a priority.”
