Midlothian tenants’ fears over benefits

With major UK Government reforms of the welfare benefits system high on the housing agenda, a recent survey of Melville Housing tenants has shown that a huge 85 per cent are worried about how they’ll make ends meet once the full weight of the reforms are felt.

Melville, Midlothian’s largest registered social landlord, carried out the research of 200 tenants in January and February. As well as a high level of concern, almost six out of 10 of those that replied would also fall foul of the Government’s new bedroom tax, which reduces housing benefit payments for every spare bedroom a tenant has.
