MSP raises fears over benefit cuts

EDINBURGH Pentlands SNP MSP Gordon MacDonald has warned that the UK Government’s welfare reforms will have a negative effect on disabled people in Scotland.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, he quoted evidence from campaign group Inclusion Scotland that the benefit cuts could lead to destitution and homelessness.

The group has argued the proposed changes may simplify the benefit system, but they would leave many people without adequate funding.

Mr MacDonald said disabled people in Scotland stood to lose more than £500 million a year in benefits.

He said: “Scotland will be disproportionately affected because we have a higher rate of people with impairments than other areas of the UK.

“These changes would lead to a loss of disabled people’s ability to live independently and participate in community life.”
