Dead for six years, the first tree planted at Newbattle Abbey College is growing new shoots.
At a recent ceremony as part of the college’s continuing 75th anniversary celebrations, saplings taken from the old sycamore were planted by pupils from St David’s Primary School.
The baby trees had been kept in a nearby nursery after the 446-year-old original came crashing down in strong winds.
On Friday, November 16, more than 20 children from the Dalkeith school arrived at the college to work with lecturer Paul Connachan in the community garden.
They then took part in a woodland walk ahead of the official planting ceremony.
