Newbattle Medical Practice in Mayfield has become the third Midlothian surgery in the past year to close its patient list to new patients.
It follows Bonnyrigg and Dalkeith, who closed their lists last year.
Mayfield and Easthouses Community Council chairman Robert Hogg was told of the news by Alistair Short and Hamish Reid from the NHS.
Mr Hogg said: “With Dalkeith and Bonnyrigg full and Newbyres struggling it’s a really worrying situation. We were told that Newbyres could close its patient list in the next few weeks. That’s, say, 45,000 people there.
“And what are they doing? Building new houses. So it’s only going to get worse. There is no joined up thinking. I think the planners should be working closer with the NHS and communities.
“It’s a real crisis. People are concerned about it. You are waiting longer to get appointments now, and no wonder. I don’t see it getting any better in the near future.”
Eibhlin McHugh, Director, Midlothian Health and Social Care Partnership said: “GP Practices in NHS Lothian are working hard to maintain access for patients but many are unfortunately facing difficulties in recruiting GPs – an issue being faced by surgeries across the country.
“The decision to introduce temporary restrictions is never taken lightly, but allows practices to cope with pressures and ensure their service remains both safe and effective.”
