New thinking on old age is up for debate

A THINK tank dedicated to issues of ageing and population change will debate changing the perception of retirement in Edinburgh next month.

The International Longevity Centre-UK says it wants to consider whether a new understanding of the balance between work, leisure and rest in later life can help society to respond to population ageing.

It argues dramatic improvements in life expectancy should mean society can benefit from a “longevity dividend” and become happier and more productive as it ages, but also points out the older population is a very heterogeneous group and its needs will vary significantly.

The debate on February 9 at 4pm in the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Queen Street, is organised in co-operation with the actuarial profession and supported by reinsurance firm Swiss Re.
