The consultation process for the replacement Newabttle High School is expected to begin in the “very near future”.

The £34m project has already proven to be controversial since it was given the go-ahead last September.

People in the three communities that serve Newbattle - Gorebridge, Newtongrange and Mayfield - will be keen to get involved in this latest phase of consultation, which will ultimately determine what goes into the new school.

Speaking at last week’s Mayfield Community Council meeting, Councillor Lisa Beattie (SNP), the Cabinet Member for Education, revealed that the consultation process will re-commence shortly.

She said: “I’m having pretty much daily conversations with (Newbattle High School’s headteacher) Colin Taylor about the new school.

“The next phase of the consultation is going to begin very shortly.

“First we will speak to the students when they come back from their summer holidays about what they would like to see in it. A lot of that and the public consultation will be comparing with Lasswade.

“So the public consultation will begin in the very near future.”
