NHS closes in on superbugs

NHS Lothian is on track to meet Scottish Government targets on superbugs, bosses have said.

Holyrood has demanded that no more than 529 annual cases of MRSA or C.diff occur in the area’s hospitals by 2013.

At one point the health board was one of the worst offending in Scotland, but after years of hard work on the issue, staff have managed to turn the situation around.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has long said cracking down on hospital-acquired infections is a priority.

Director of public health Dr Alison McCallum said: “We are now on course to meet the 2013 targets.

“It’s a real achievement for all the staff.”
