No action to be taken against Midlothian councillor

No police action is to be taken against a Midlothian councillor who was accused of making a homophobic remark at a polling station during the local council elections.

Peter Boyes (Lab) had been reported to police over claims he called SNP candidate Paul Bertram a “wee p**f” while they contested the Midlothian East ward.

A police spokesman said: “Following a comprehensive enquiry into reports of an alleged hate crime in Midlothian on May 3, a man was detained, interviewed and due to insufficiency of evidence, released without charge. No further police action will be taken at this time.”

Councillor Boyes is a former deputy leader of Midlothian Council and has represented the Mayfield and Easthouses area as a councillor for 32 years at both district and regional levels. He was one of three candidates elected to the Midlothian East ward.
