Online dating comes to life

Stand By Your Man (Channel 5, Friday June 13, 10pm, )

What’s It All About? As well as introducing us to the phrase ‘no likey, no lighty’ and showing that there’s more to Paddy McGuinness than being Peter Kay’s mate, Take Me Out has also proved that in a world of online matchmaking sites, there’s still a place for TV dating shows.

Now Stand By Your Man is the latest series to try to inject a little romance into the schedules.

Hosted by former Westlife member Brian McFadden and Freshly Squeezed’s Laura Jackson, it may seem to share some of its DNA with Take Me Out, but it also reflects how people who don’t want to be filmed flirting with strangers go about finding love in the 21st century.

Each episode sees four men competing to win a date with one of 40 girls. In the first round, the ladies will have to judge the guys based on a selfie and a dating profile.

Then it’s time to find out if the blokes live up to their online personas as they arrive in the studio, ready to take part in the next rounds.

Look Out For: The Hashtag Awkward round, which provides a public service by reminding us all that the stuff we post on social media might later be seen by people we are trying to impress.
