Back to the future of travel in post-Brexit Europe- Kenny MacAskill

Travelling to and conducting business with Europe is going to be far harder now. The price is going to be paid not just by EU nationals here in Scotland but by UK citizens seeking to visit or trade with Europe.

I recalll travelling around Europe, as many of my age group did, in the late 1970s. There were border checks then and even an iron curtain in place, and for those tradin,g life could be complicated with tariffs and paperwork.

Our world has globalised since and is much more complex now in so many more ways

Few had timeshares or even homes abroad then, never mind partners or family from a different country.

Now many do and its why Brexit is going to complicate matters and not just at passport control.

Back then mobile phones hadn’t been invented. Now they’re ubiquitous, if not essential. Roaming charges that once caught many out, leaving a hefty bill from a foreign trip, were resolved by the EU.

Your phone that went with you and stayed on regardless no longer was a potential money pit.

Now our departure opens up dangers for many who don’t take care when travelling. Medical care likewise. Emergency treatment was assured and covered by EU rules. Now, as back in the 70s, not having travel insurance you run the risk of a huge bill if misfortune befalls you.

It’s even worse for businesses both large and small. Before you just traded your goods, now there’s to be reams of paperwork and potential checks. Not just for you to complete but for those you’re trading with.

Many don’t know just what forms are to be filled in or even whether their customers will bother or seek an alternative less bureaucratic source.

That’s why Brexit’s a costly and backward step.
