The Da Vinci cafe on Edinburgh’s Broughton Street offered a friendly welcome to Hayley Matthews.

I met a friend during the week for coffee and we’d planned on having a big John Lewis scone. However, it wasn’t meant to be as the store’s cafes are still closed.

After 20 minutes of working out the roadwork/footpath closures we gave up heading for town and went down Broughton Street instead and I’m glad we did!

Denny (the mum in charge) could see baby Oryn was sleeping in his buggy so gave us a wee quiet spot through the back, which was bliss. It’s little personal touches like this that really help mums when out and about.

I had an arts and crafts bag for Oryn to play with whilst we ate and Denny told me how she took her son (who’s now in his 20s) on a plane when he was wee and only managed it because she had a Thomas the Tank Engine bag full of pens. She was very sweet.

I sat munching on a veggie breakfast which Oryn helped with, taking care of the tattie scone and beans, and it was just what we needed.

I always say everything happens for a reason and I love supporting new local places, especially in these times. The warm welcome and friendly chat was also just what we needed in such harsh times of masks and hand sanitiser.

So I’ll be back for more coffee and breakfasts because let’s face it, John Lewis is overrated anyway.
