What’s been debated in Scotland for a while has just been discovered by the UK media and it’s going to cause an almighty political stushie in the months ahead.

Both the Financial Times and the Guardian have devoted prominent space in recent days to explain how BoJo’s Government is planning to restrict devolution in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and limit the democratic powers exercised in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

UK ministers plan to push through laws at Westminster which will straight-jacket devolved decision-making.

Instead of returning all powers from Brussels promised by Brexiteers, the Tories want to impose ‘statutory frameworks’ under the cover of UK ‘single-market’ measures.

Not only will this impact on areas where the UK negotiates free-trade agreements, giving permission for lower environmental and agricultural standards, but could challenge progressive public health measures such as minimum alcohol pricing and other policy areas such as free education.

With less than a year to go until the next Scottish Parliament elections, the UK Government is going to deliver a damaging Brexit and pick an almighty constitutional fight on devolution.

At a time when the SNP is polling more than 50 per cent of the vote and support for Scottish independence has reached a sustained majority, BoJo is making the case for Nicola Sturgeon and the Yes movement.
