I just don’t dig the timing of all these city roadworks – Hayley Matthews

Everywhere I look just now all I seem to see are roadworks. Roadworks, roadworks, roadworks – as far as the eye can see! Yes things have definitely got back to normal now (well just about).

Between the roadworks and the energy company canvassers standing outside the supermarkets trying to sign you up to a years supply, it’s clear things are on the mend.

I have to say, though, I think the roadworks (unless absolutely essential) should be put on hold for the meantime.

I mean, we’ve just seen reports out of the worst recession coming; it doesn’t look good for businesses and people have already suffered enough.

So how do the council help? They fire up the roadworks along Leith Walk and all over the rest of Edinburgh, making it difficult to get round the city or park anywhere.

I know they’d already had the preparations under way on Leith Walk pre-lockdown, but surely with the looming bad times for businesses just around the corner, the council and governments should be doing everything they can to encourage people in to the shops.

Keep the parking free for the bays, or allow people to use single yellow lines, let the shops open their doors and hold off on digging up the road until at least we get back into the swing of it. I have roadworks right outside my door just now and it’s all to do with putting in a cycle lane that looks out of place and unnecessary.

They’ve widened the pavement and shortened the road space.

It just seems to me that the priorities of the council aren’t on a par with supporting local business but finishing their check list and getting all that allocated budget spent!
