For the first time since the end of February I got to see my mum in hospital this week – Hayley Matthews

Even though the visits opened up a few weeks ago, I’d had a tummy bug and didn’t feel great so to be on the safe side, decided to wait two weeks before going in.

Her room is lovely and very cosy, it was nice to see her and to be able to be with her, despite not being able to hug her.

I had full PPE on and it felt strange but I could see she was delighted to see me and hope it lifted her spirits.

It must have been a really hard few months for her as well as all those in hospital who have been unable to mix with friends and family and see people dear to them.

I have to admit I was quite shocked at my mum’s mental decline, she’s slipping away and it’s hard to watch. The circle of life is both beautiful and brutal to witness.

We rejoice when a baby is born, yet feel ripped apart when someone is leaving us, and I can see her slipping away.

I’m not sure if it’s the dementia or the lack of seeing people due to being in lockdown but it’s tough to watch.

So to all those who have spent the last few months or so in hospital and have been finding it really hard to cope, I’m sending some positive vibes your way. I can only imagine the drain it has had on your mental health. We’re such sociable beings and we need sociable interaction as well as lots of kisses and cuddles to get through the day so here’s to opening up the hospitals again and getting back in to visit those we love.
