My family is getting excited for the big day on May 6 (but not about some posh bloke) – Susan Dalgety

Only 12 days to go until the big day on Saturday, May 6.

I have bought a special dress – Alice Temperley in the John Lewis sale, if you must know. Ordered my shoes (worn only once) from Vinted and have booked an appointment with a box of medium blonde triple hair colour.

Our whole family is very excited. My mother decided against a new outfit, choosing one of her classic dresses that hasn’t been seen in public for a while. My son and grandson have pressed their kilts and my sister is still colour-matching her outfit.

And at 3pm on the big day we will all stand to attention as the sacred ceremony plays out. There will be tears, laughter, and probably too much fizz drunk at the after-party. There may even be some quiche, but it won’t be a Coronation flan, as we will be celebrating my niece’s wedding, not the anointment of King Charles III as our new monarch.

Lindsey and Calum booked their date a year ago, when Queen Elizabeth still seemed indestructible and there was nothing else on the calendar but a few football matches. No doubt some of the wedding party (those of us over 50) will take a sneak peak at the coronation on our smartphones, but no one is disappointed that we will miss Charles’s big day.

We are not alone. The run-up to this historic moment – and it is significant, regardless of your view on the monarchy – has been very low-key, desultory even. I remember much more excitement in the weeks before the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last year.

I have spotted a few sparkly t-shirts on sale, bearing the legend “Long Live King Charles III”, and the ever-reliable Marks & Spencer offers a rather tasteful Coronation mug and the obligatory Coronation biscuit tin. But that’s about it. Scotland seems underwhelmed by the event.

But don’t read too much into that, we are not on the cusp of a revolution. We celebrated the Platinum Jubilee, not because of our loyalty to the Crown, but because of our affection for the late Queen – she was the nation’s granny. Her son, on the other hand, is simply a posh old bloke with more than his fair share of family problems.
