Scotland’s choice: Brexit Britain or independence – Angus Robertson

The UK Government is imposing a hard Brexit on Scotland, but not Northern Ireland, writes Angus Robertson

Edinburgh voted three to one to remain in the European Union, while Scotland voted overwhelmingly by 62 per cent to stay in the largest trading block in the world.

Regardless of that, Westminster is imposing a hard Brexit on Scotland in a way it is not to Northern Ireland. Now the costs are becoming clearer.

The UK Government has just launched a taxpayer-funded propaganda campaign to prepare us for the costs of Brexit that we voted against.

All of us in Scotland will have to pay higher travel insurance as the benefits of the European Health Insurance Card are taken away from us.

We will have to wait longer in travel queues and it will become all but totally impractical to take pets on holiday.

When we finally get there, we will have to pay higher mobile phone charges. Meanwhile, the UK Government will spend more than £720 million in border infrastructure to make it more difficult to trade with the biggest market in the world.

They have not yet have been completely open about the fact that their border plans include posts between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

As all of this is happens the UK passport is no longer top of the passport index of visa-free travel. We have now been overtaken by small independent European countries like: Finland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Austria, Sweden, Portugal, Netherlands, Ireland and Switzerland.

The choice is coming again for Scotland: do we want to be part of Boris Johnson’s little Brexit Britain or a successful northern member state of the European Union.
