Talk of the Town: Festive tune out of the Darkness

WHILE soldiers from the 1 Scots return to Dreghorn Barracks tonight after a six-month tour of Afghanistan was cut short, there is no chance their seafaring colleagues aboard HMS Edinburgh will be home in time for Christmas.

They’ll be tucking into turkey in the South Atlantic, where they’re undertaking a six-month deployment.

So, as a present to their families, they have recorded a comedy Christmas music video, which features them singing along to Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End) by rock group The Darkness.

The video ends with the sailors holding up a message reading: “To all our families, we love you and miss you always. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

Well, you can tell by the way I use my bike . .

WE told you yesterday how Sir Chris Hoy had expressed disappointment at missing out on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards and its after-show party.

But now it turns out that the Edinburgh Freeman got his dancing shoes on after all – while out Christmas shopping.

Tweeting from Australia, where he is on a training camp, he said: “Walked through shopping centre earlier & The BeeGees ‘Stayin Alive’ came on. Realised it was physically impossible not to stride in time.”

Sign up for it, Santa

SANTA apparently didn’t make it to the Christmas fair at Bonnyrigg Parish Church.

An item in the latest issue of the church magazine apologises and claims: “He was running late with everything due to a strike by his elves over the minimum wage.”

Unfortunately, the magazine offers no information on how the dispute was resolved. But the real question is when is Santa going to join the Scottish Government and Edinburgh City Council in signing up for the living wage?

Claus for concern

AFTER yesterday’s positive Evening News reviews of Edinburgh’s shopping centre Santas, it seemed all was well in the grotto game.

But according to a survey, many centres are in fact giving the real Father Christmas a bad name.

Cheap presents, poor hygiene and fashion and expensive access were all cited in the research.

One concerned mother said: “Now my child who had been looking forward to Christmas since July thinks that Santa doesn’t like him. What is a five-year-old going to do with a spatula?”
