What are the chances of celebrating Father’s Day on the first birthday of your daughter? I have no idea, but Sunday was pretty special for me as Saoirse blew out her single birthday cake candle and had a tremendous time.

I will always keep my first Father’s Day card with her handprints on it and cherish the joy she has brought into the lives of Jen and I, our families and people who have met our lively young redhead.

I have no doubt that all parents are bursting with pride and love for their offspring as they watch them grow up. It is not a competition, but I feel particularly blessed to have a daughter with an inquisitive mind, a wicked laugh and sense of humour. The occasional night-time sleep disturbance and challenge of a one year-old learning to walk is more than a price worth paying.

Since Saoirse was born I’ve learned just how important parental leave should be ...

Our labradoodles Freyja and Marnie have been remarkably patient, even when having their ears pulled or experiencing some over-exuberant baby petting.

Looking back at 12 months’ worth of photos, it is amazing how much Saoirse has grown, developed and learned.

I can’t wait for the next year of fun as she toddles, runs, explores, plays and begins to speak. Father’s Day 2020 was really special with the added bonus of baby Saoirse’s first birthday. I can’t wait for the next year of experiences with Saoirse and Father’s Day 2021.
