No-deal Brexit

Boris Johnson has warned there is a “strong possibility” that the UK will fail to broker a trade deal with the EU as he urged the public to prepare for the end of the Brexit transition period

Colin Gilbert

We've known from the start that any deal will involve someone getting shafted. Johnson will tread the easiest path - go for no deal and blame everything on the EU and the seemingly impossible hand he was dealt. This will be a disaster, obviously, but since he won't want to go down in history as the guy who agreed a poor deal, it's what he has chosen. And Brexit voters can blame it on remainers or the EU. So we all lose, as predicted from the beginning. Lovely.

Is anyone honestly still surprised? We only had four years and three PMs to get the job done. Incredible and embarrassing.

Ruth Durie

Madness. Even if Brexit had been a good idea, this is the most ludicrous possible way to do it and we'll be paying for years.

Rob Donald

They never had a deal and this was always going to be the outcome, due to gross incompetence and being unqualified for the job. Absolute morons the lot of them, I wouldn't let them run my local Aldi, never mind a country.

Robert Ayr

Every business ready with the knives out as the hedge funders, Tories and their pals ride off into the sunset.

Craig Nelson

Keep up the good work, Boris.

Liz Rae

Vladimir Putin: "Job done! Thanks Boris."

I will wait and see what the leaders of the EU say – we will get the truth from them!

Pamela Ross

What a surprise! Said no one ever!

David Greig

Can we please substitute England for UK in this? Scotland voted remain but will be shafted by any deal made by those English nationalists.

Max Halliday

A thought it was “oven ready”

Brian Jenkinson

Erm, we knew that in 2016!

Road closures

More controversy over Edinburgh traffic measures as road closures proposed near primary school

Diarmid Martin

I live in Buckstone. Other than the start of school and end of school, the area is like a ghost town. All that needs to happen is for the school to let children in at the start of the day, but no parents. Younger age groups should be allowed to be accompanied by a parent to avoid queuing of parents/children in the street. This is the only primary school in the south Edinburgh area that I am aware of that has queuing outside - madness.

CEC using the Covid pandemic as an excuse to do whatever they want with zero public consultation and will then plead poverty when it comes to reinstating all the closed roads.

Lucy Barclay

Roads have been designed for the convenience of cars forever. It's well overdue that pedestrians, especially children are prioritised. Walking to and from another school it's really concerning that the roads are so poorly laid out to enable children to get safely to school by foot. Huge bins at junctions that they can't see over and lack of zebra crossings etc.

Spaces for People is just more council doublespeak. It’s real name should be Ego-trip for Macinnes.

Kevin Connolly

If there is still a need for physical distancing going to and from school, as quoted by the council? Why is it not happening at all Edinburgh schools? There is more to this than using the pandemic as an excuse for road closures.

Lesley McInnes has clearly never visited the site. How can there be through traffic in the Buckstone Estate?

Susan Ferguson

Maybe if they sent a few traffic wardens and police officers at school opening and closing times they would achieve the same result and save themselves some money?

Thomas MacDonald

Look at that lovely street - wide, sensible, safe, easy to understand. There’s a place to park, as wide as four cars, wide kerbs, street lighting, clear road markings.....

William Crawford

If the council and developers didn’t build flats everywhere, resulting in more roads and traffic, and actually left some green space for people to enjoy, then they wouldn’t need to then close roads to give people space. They build everywhere then moan when it results in traffic.
