Covid tiers

Fury and legal threats as Edinburgh remains under Level Three Covid restrictions

Donald J Makin

Good luck with the legal action. Be aware, though, Holyrood voted on this so, you'll need to sue to those who voted for the measures too. It's not just the FM alone who takes these decisions.

Bit late for that. I said ages ago every business, especially hospitality, should have done.

Absolutely groundless to be told not to trade and probably illegal. Zero evidence - the continued case numbers prove that.

Sarah Clark

Surely they should see that customers are more likely to go back to a restaurant that’s taken health and safety reasons for closing and followed them without question than putting money first?

Michelle Allan

Good! I think all businesses should do the same.

Steven Magee

It’s time that all the science that is being used to make these business-killing decisions was published.

Anyone would think we are in the middle of a pandemic. We open up and the spike of cases ahead of the Christmas period would then mean we could see severe restrictions into January. Yes, the hospitality industry is being hit hard, but so are many others.

Gillian Wood

I’m feeling like business owners are well aware of the risks of the virus now and it’s time to open everything up and let people take their health as their own responsibility. I’d put money on it that the majority of hospitality businesses are aware they won’t have the freedom of folk just walking in and working to what was previously their full capacity but they’d be happy with a new reduced capacity if it means their business has a chance to survive. Adults having a few drinks with food is not the same as teenagers getting wrecked at a club. It’s only a matter of time before people start to ignore the rules anyway.

Lesley Matson

I hope they lose. Why should they be any different to any other business under the tier system?

Bobby Bravado

Check out Russia’s advice to citizens taking their vaccine - no alcohol for two months.

West Dumbarton numbers are really low and we are still lumped in tier three because we come under GGC health board. Helensburgh, Argyle and Bute have higher numbers than West Dunbartonshire but they are in tier two, but guess what – they also use GGC health board. So they just do as they wish with tiers because they have the power to do so.

Steve Smith

Consistency in your leaders is important. This is another demonstration that she isn’t up to the job. Her judgment calls, rather than acting on advice, are breaking the law! Punish Edinburgh because others will break the law and visit – joke.

Atholl Cunningham

I hope they win their case. The Scottish government is just doing as they please with no thought for businesses or people’s lives. It's not about protecting people’s lives now, it appears to me to be an ulterior motive.

Angela Mcdermott

Too little to late. She should save the money she’ll waste on lawyers to put back into her business. The only winner will be her lawyer.

Kevin Whyte

Get over it, you’re being subsidised to the max.

I don’t like it Edinburgh still being in tier three, but when I look around the UK, Wales back in some form of lockdown , Northern Ireland the same, England numbers rising again in some areas after the lockdown. So if I need to wait a wee bit longer, then so be it. What other part of the UK went five weeks without a death due to Covid 19 this year?

Sam Chan

Without alcohol over Xmas/New Year, does Nicola Sturgeon think restaurants/ bars can even break even, all while people are thronging to stores?

Jon Clark

I’m curious .....… when people lose their employment, they will most likely end up claiming Universal Credit/benefits. This costs government multi-millions of pounds, so why on earth would the government want to deliberately “ruin the economy”? What would be the benefit to the government in doing this? A ruined economy doesn’t generate tax revenue and places more financial strain on government funds. If there is a deliberate, non-scientific reason behind these tier decisions, logically it isn’t to “ruin the economy”. That makes no sense at all.
