Luxury hotel developers plead with councillors for another chance to revamp old Royal High School in Edinburgh

Diarmid Martin

It was never the council’s right to issue a contract on a property they are custodians of and not the owner; they should pull the contract and let the residents of Edinburgh decide.

Why would they need to plead? The council marketed this building as being suitable for a 120-bed hotel operation then signed a contract with a developer who was planning on converting and extending the building to form a large hotel who has now had their scheme refused by the SG. The developer may choose to sit on it for the rest of the contract - or they may choose to submit a new and smaller application. The decision to award the contract in the first place was the council’s, so if anyone needs to plead it is them.

Jim Shanley

Meanwhile the building crumbles .....only in Edinburgh.

Lucien Romano

Would make a lovely tram depot, but if not, student flats for sure.

John Hood

St Mary's should have first call on this site. They have provided outstanding musical education for generations of Edinburgh school children and are an integral part of the cultural fabric of this city.

Kevin Connolly

This building is going to crumble and fall to bits before this council allows someone to save it.

Danda Ross

Sad that it wasn't developed as the Scottish Parliament.

Alastair Moir

Difficult to see a future as a luxury hotel.

Adam Stuart Fergie

Just let somebody do something, anything at this point.

Diane Czajka

St Mary's Music School, please.

This should have been the Scottish parliament building, but it’s not, so why does it not make sense to make use of the building? Just look at the years that Bangour Village in West Lothian has been left to rot and Lanark Barracks were left and are now being developed to renew the local area. To me it makes sense.

Mike Lebowski

Just what we need, another hotel.

Paul Mcgrory

Wetherspoons?

Scott James

It's like every building in the city is being taken over to benefit anyone other than those who live here.

Paula Docherty

Open it back up for performing arts, make use of it, not a hotel

If we’re going to have a racing circuit, then let’s use all the spare trams gathering dust in Gogar depot and create a really exciting spectacle! Pro-celebrity tram racing could be the next big thing. Just imagine David Coulthard versus Ian Rankin in a 500 mile endurance race!

Ross Attenburgh

Why are people still taking this seriously and giving it the time of day? There are no "plans". Some absolute fantasist copied and pasted Albert Park onto the lagoons on Microsoft Paint, drew a few lines and sent it to East Lothian Council months ago. He's now bleating to the press that they completely ignored his loony idea. It's attention seeking of the highest order and folk are giving him exactly what he wants.

Martin John McIntosh Tait

I thought we were trying to reduce our emissions. Race cars put out three times as much as a normal vehicle.

Steve Bell

Theme park would be a better idea and combine Edinburgh Zoo into it to make a Scottish flamingo land. It's great for the economy, fun for families, environmentally friendly and gives the Edinburgh Zoo animals a better relocation to expand as the site has become too small.

Sounds good. But could you picture the amount of traffic? If it was going to happen, there is plenty of land around the airport for sale.

Shaun Donaldson

I love my motor racing, especially F1, but I’m well against this hideous idea. The infrastructure around Musselburgh wouldn’t have coped if there was an F1 race weekend.

Iain Fisher

Looks like the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, Australia.

Billy Mcleary

A lot of short-sighted, old fashioned folk. This should be welcomed.
