Politics of Covid

Keeping Edinburgh in Tier 3 is a political decision by Nicola Sturgeon, says Ian Murray MP

Joyce Cox

Why would she do that? That is the question she asked the journo who hinted the same. She looked him straight in the eye and said 'Why would I do that?' It makes no sense when you want the country's economy to be up and running as quickly as possible to do anything at all to hinder its progress.

This has been nothing but political since the start. She does not care about one thing apart from Indyref2. Not a chance she would see Edinburgh prosper compared to Glasgow. That’s her heartland with all the SNP votes.

Brian Anderson

The SNP are decimating the hospitality trade. They shut down pubs etc in tier 3 Fife, updated things the other day and we're still in tier three! So has closing down pubs worked? Nope.In just 5 minutes in my local shop I saw seven people without masks. Nicola, Covid is being spread in shops, not the well-regulated hospitality trade.

Anne Paton

Of course it is. She can’t upset Glasgow can she? It would be a case of Edinburgh gets and her constituents don’t. That would never do!

Anna Mackintosh

Why is there £1 billion sitting there and not given to these businesses? Is that actually true?

The decision has completely destroyed all faith in the tiered system. The people of Edinburgh did everything asked of them and it made no difference due to a political decision. The lesson learned is, why even bother following guidelines?

Chris Storey

We should have been tier two for weeks. It’s a total nonsense, there is no difference between having a glass of wine with a meal in a restaurant in the evening from having the same meal, in the same restaurant- with the same people before 6pm with a non alcoholic cocktail. Many of us work and are heavily inconvenienced by this pointless ‘rule’.

Air travel

Nicola Sturgeon accused by Edinburgh Airport of 'campaigning against aviation'

Paul Burgess

Evidence shows that the second virus wave was mainly caused by people coming back from foreign holidays in the summer. Air travel is the main culprit. Bosses at the airport only care about money.

She is quite right All those people who went on holiday came back and didn’t isolate so school children and others were put at great risk. Stop being so selfish, think of all the people like me who are vulnerable. You could be responsible for killing me or your granny.

Gus Stewart

She was asked a question, “Would you book a summer holiday right now” and she said “No, but I really hope things are back to normal by summer.” Hardly the same thing, Mr Dewar. Many of us are still waiting for refunds for cancelled flights eight months ago.

Iain Lancastle

Absolute rubbish. She advised against booking a foreign holiday because it's not possible to predict the status of the pandemic so far in the future. She pointed out that even if UK vaccination goes according to plan there is no guarantee that the destination countries will be the same. They could even be in lockdown or restricting visitors. That is plain and simple honesty.

Brian Jenkinson

And advising people not to book their holidays just yet is against the aviation industry? Who has the crystal ball that knows for sure that everything will be fine next summer? Don't forget that things need to be fine everywhere, not just here, as their rules also have an effect.

Well, she did ask for airports to reduce capacity before the pandemic hit - you know, the thing that would have saved thousands of lives. Never mind, thanks to Westminster we were able to keep the airports open and the rest is a tragic history.

Lisa Cairns

We have lazy politicians who cannot think outside the box. There are plenty of ways to safely control businesses and still keep the economy going.

Thomas Mcilwraith

The biggest polluting industry on earth!

Nick Crawley

All non-essential air travel should have been banned at the start of the pandemic.

Karen Robertson

I for one will be booking a holiday next year, the sooner the better.

Ken Stirling

Edinburgh Airport has done most to put people off aviation with their ridiculous greed.
