Police Scotland has failed in an “outrageous” bid to restrict the opening hours at Dalkeith Miners’ Welfare and Social Club.
At a heated meeting of Midlothian Licensing Board last week, Chief Inspector Jim Royan attempted to convince members that ‘on sales’ hours should be cut to address issues such as crime and disorder and public safety.
He called for a reduction to 10am-midnight Monday to Friday (currently 10am-1am), 10am-midnight on Saturdays (currently 10am-2am) and 11am-midnight on Sundays (currently 11am-1am).
The board granted the club’s application to vary its premises licence so members of the public no longer need to be signed in.
