Passenger is killed by ex-boy racer

A PASSENGER died and three others were injured when a former “boy racer” tried to show off his driving skills.

Stuart Cunningham, 42, had been drinking before he got behind the wheel of a borrowed car. He was doing hand-brake turns before smashing into a tree while trying to take a corner too fast.

He told police called to the smash on the outskirts of Bathgate, West Lothian, that he had been trying to relive his youth.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that mechanic Cunningham of Glasgow Road, Falkirk, already had convictions for dangerous driving, drink driving and driving while disqualified.

Yesterday he admitted causing death by dangerous driving and failing to report an accident. Raul Escribano, 25, died after the green Volkswagen Passat which Cunningham was driving overturned and came to rest on its roof at the junction of Limefield Road and Drumcross Road on August 23.

Passengers John McGarry, 24, and Scott Laidlaw, 25, and 15-year-old boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, were injured.

Judge Lord Turnbull called for background reports and remanded Cunningham in custody.
