Transport Scotland has taken ownership of four specialists road safety machines, which have been designed and manufactured by a Penicuik engineering firm.
Last week, Findlay Irvine Limited handed over the GripTesters to the national roads agency.
The new machines automatically measure the “grip” of the road surface, collate the data and provide it in clear, graphic reports and display.
They follow the same design principals of those used on airport runways across the world – where an accident can have catastrophic consequences.
The GripTesters, produced at Findlay Irvine’s Bog Road base, will be operated by the contractors looking after the four highway regions of Scotland – Bear Scotland (north-east and south-east), Scotland Transerv (north-west) and Amey Scotland (south-west).
