Police in Midlothian are issuing a fresh warning to businesses in the area after an incident in Penicuik where a man carried out a ‘ringing the changes’ fraud at a charity shop.

The fraud happened on Wednesday, August 21, at the Cancer Research UK shop in Kentigern Mall.

In the latest fraud, the suspect bought a small item, and while the till was open he asked the cashier to change some bank notes. He then sought to confuse the cashier and as a result, defrauded the shop of a small amount of cash.

It is believed that the same man may have targeted other charity shops in Penicuik, and inquiries are ongoing in order to establish what other shops have been affected.

He is described as white, 45 to 50-years-old, 5ft 6ins tall, heavily built, with a Geordie accent.
