A Penicuik woman has spoken of her bedside vigil for her soldier fiance, who was critically injured by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal Callum Brown (22) lost both his legs and shattered his pelvis when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) while returning to his compound.

Callum, who serves with the Penicuik-based Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, was finishing his final task before returning home for a holiday after more than four months in Helmand province.

Fiancee Laura Taylor (22) was told of Callum’s serious injuries within hours of the explosion on January 28.

“I was devastated. Obviously, they couldn’t really let us know the extent of his injuries because he was in theatre. No words can describe it to be honest,” she said.
